As a girl and Muslim that is my identity, and I cannot isolate that from me. Indeed all the girls in my shoes want better let alone to deserve better. One comparable aspect that can be found in both novels is the many similar themes explored throughout both novels. Many of these themes are prominent throughout literature. When comparing identical themes from two diverse authors, one can understand and appreciate these differences and similarities. Although these themes are commonly discussed, Paton and Faulkner have distinct methods in which the messages in these themes are expressed. Faulkner’s use of expressive visual language, symbolism, different narrators, and motifs bring these themes to life in a very dark manor, which is one reason he is studied by many today. Paton also uses symbolism to discuss these themes, but expresses a different, more intimate tone in this novel than Faulkner projects in his. Although there are many themes to compare between these novels, the most prominent a re sickness, religion, family, and race, as well as comparing the authors’ stylistic approaches. Sickness and suffering is a comparable theme in the two novels. Even in the titles of both novels, this theme is evident. In addition to the title, Faulkner continues on this theme of sickness and suffering and progresses the theme by introducing the theme of death and life. They were ruled by the British until 1946, when the British recognized its independence. The political history of Jordan has varied much since the starting point of this country. Since the beginning, tribal relations among the people of the land had much influence over the creation of a new state. This influence seeped into the political and social arenas (al-Attiyat, Shteiwi, Sweiss 17). Another influence in Jordan?s politics was when a special turning point occurred in 1989, where a political reform swept the nation. Political parties that had once been barred were re-established. This reform laid the stepping stones for the Jordanians to achieve a democratic administration. This small country has surprisingly one of the freest economies in the Middle East and continues its movement of political liberalization, in an attempt to achieve a democratic environment for its citizens (Wikipedia). Assumptions: Jordan still has not achieved a true democratic government yet. Jordan?s politics seems very limited and bounded by the government. Dry September Essays Dry September Paper Dry September Paper The William Faulkner’s short story Dry September, published in 1931, takes place in a fictional residence of Jefferson, which is located somewhere in the southern community. Faulkner wanted to release something that will stretch our truth-sorting muscles, because this story is a story of rumor. Rumors are part of our society, and they seem to be part of our lives too because it is always been very difficult to clear out the truth of any situation. So, all the situations we are going through could be a part of a rumor’s factory. Two main characters that the rumor is about are helping Faulkner’s story; the Nigger called Will Mayes, raped a white woman, Minnie Cooper. The rumor, the story, pops up through the ‘’bloody September twilight’’. The barbershop is a place where it all begun. When it comes to such things, when the story becomes a main discussion, we got to choose, will we accept thing as true without any proof, or will we base our conclusion on facts? So, this story is about how the main characters, as barber Henry, McLendon, youths from the barbershop who are representing the southern community, investigate a rumor. It is ‘’Bloody September night’’ and a crew of both young people and strangers are taking a discussion in a barbershop owned by Henry ‘‘Hawkshaw’’ and some other barbarians. They were discussing a rumor, which owns the day in Jefferson residence. Is Will innocent or not, many of them where already sure of that, because how could it be that a nigger’s word is taken before a white woman’s? Not a speak. The fellows agree that the young will had done something wrong without investigating the problem. Then, John McLendon, who commanded troops at the front in France, show up to collect the fellows to punish the nigger for the crime he had done. His bad attitude rapidly affects other people’s attitudes in the shop and they leave the room with a lot of hate inside themselves. But not all of them think Will is done something bad, Henry defends him by saying to his fellows that he knows him personally, and that that couldn’t be him. Even if he tries to show them that the town isn’t just ‘’black’’ and ‘’white’’, and that they should seem happy by having such ‘’good’’ kind of niggers in there, the people ignore him. He leaves the shop in hope to stop and persuade them not to hurt him because of his innocence. He gets in car. They got the confused Will, handcuff him and put in the car too. Suddenly, Henry says he got sick stomach and wants out. But McLendon says that he could jump out because he isn’t stopping the car. That’s what he does. He jumps out and hides in dust-sheathed weeds. Afterwards, McLeadon is going home, arguing with his wife who was waiting for him even if it was midnight. He lays his gun on the table beside the bed, and there was no sound, the dark world seemed to lie stricken beneath the cold moon and the lidless stars. Minnie Cooper is a 40 years old unmarried woman. She is haggard looking, exhausted, always wearing bright dresses. At the end of the story, she has a collapse, she screams and laughs in the middle of the cinema. Her ‘’friends’’ lead her home, wondering Will really attacked her or not. I found some symbols, which may refer to some of society’s main characterisations; characters’ minds are locked up due to surroundings and they can’t let their passion and interest see things in a different way than in a violent. So, wrong attitudes, can never lead us to a problem’s resolvability, but unfortunately, the residence of Jefferson has to deal with that kind of problem. McLendon’s gun could symbolise the authority, threat of violence. And that is also one of the story’s main themes. People don’t really care about what is true or not, they’ve been lead by some bad values, which had been a consequence of racism. Ice manufacturing plant where Will works as a watchman, is a symbol of town’s needs. Jefferson is covered with dust, caused of sixty-two rainless days. Atmosphere is violent, always the same, nothing is being based on facts, and people get to face something new, rain maybe, some changes, hopes or innocence. This town is in a really bad condition; stale breathes, durn weather, flat and dead air with a metallic taste, haggard-looking people, and days die in a pall of dust. And then, McLendon’s house could be seen as symbol of hierarchy. Everyone is caged within the heat and dust. He hurts his wife, showing his authority, as he earlier had showed in the barbershop where he doesn’t want to discus the problem and will rather use violence to resolve it, and outdoors when he in some way punishes Will. When we are told that there are only four men in the car, and Butch was not on the running board, it seems like the narrator is talking. This might be important for the story, because, not all the facts are being representing by the characters themselves, but the narrator takes their places wisely, so we don’t even realise that. The intention could be that someone who wants to give us a message spotlights the whole Jefferson situation, and gives as the opportunity to see this situation from more perspectives. McLendon is maybe a man who is caged and can’t behave in own way just because of the people and habits, which were developed many many years ago in that area. So no one is capable of being different and think in different or correct way. Everything is based on rumors, which are swinging around the town, and everybody is looking into other’s lives. The gun at the end of the story could be a sign, which leads us to an open ending. Was Will killed by John and the other man or not, the question is now. But, as I mentioned before, we only have two choices; to conclude something based on facts, or just pretend that the truth is obvious and attempt to say that McLeadon has killed the poor Will. And is it right to call Will a ‘’poor’’ one? This shows us that people must not be motivated by prejudice, because nothing else is more correct than facts. There are more themes in this story I want to deal with, because all of them are relevant to the context of the Faulkner’s short story ‘’Dry September’’. William Faulkner’s ‘’Dry September’’ considers a problem still present in contemporary American society: crime and violence motivated by racism. What could be a difference between a good nigger and a bad one? Are they just saying that all the black people are bad, but Will is just an exception? That statement is describing that the community of Jefferson and the whole southern population is covered by racism. ‘’I know Will Mayes, he is a good nigger. ‘’(Part 1. aragraphs 2). This sentence is said by Henry Hawkshaw and shows us that he might think that Will is innocent, but that doesn’t mean that he is innocent of racist attitudes. He attempts to make a cooler atmosphere in his barbershop but refusing to agree with his fellows. And th at they really want to look after some trouble, can show us the quote in part 1 and paragraph 37: ‘’Are you going to let the black sons get away with it until one of them really does it? ’’ McLendon seems to think Will is innocent, but who cares, someone always got to be an example, and the poor Will is an unlucky one to be taken as a victim of a rumor. When taken away and put in the car, Will is speaking to them with some king of respect, and his addressing, ‘’captains’’ (part 3, p. 17) could refer to something higher, better and worthier. It is hard to say why did Henry jumped from the car, but I will think that he had no more influence on them, he had done what it was in his capability, and he saw that as a finished job. The only way to save his own life was to escape, so he acted like a coward, refusing to help Will, which also shows us that he wasn’t so innocent in his racial attitudes. In this story, I don’t really see a clue of justice. The ‘’innocent’’ Will is punished, the ‘’poor’’ Minnie is physical and physical harmed. Is there any justice? I don’t think there is, and even if those events that happened at that Saturday night could be called as acceptable ones, so will the word justice never exist. And Minnie could also be taken as a person involved in a wrongdoing, because she could stand up and say the rumor is wrong understood, but she was acting like a victim. Conclusion would be that people are capable of doing terrible things just because of not knowing anything about the problem that pops up in our society. Instead, they let their weakness rule, and so they can’t even think or analyse the reasons of the problem. More and more are willing to choose the violence rather than tolerance, and history had showed us that the bad nature and value is spreading quicker than a good one.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini - Book Review The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is one of the best books I have read in years. This is a page turner with complex characters and situations that will make you think hard about friendship, good and evil, betrayal, and redemption. It is intense and contains some graphic scenes; however, it is not gratuitous. A great book by many measures. Reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini On one level, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is the story of two boys in Afghanistan and Afghan immigrants in America. It is a story set in a culture that has become of increasing interest to Americans since the September 11, 2001, attacks. It also explores the history of the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan. On this level, it provides a good way for people to learn more about Afghan history and culture in the context of the story. Looking at The Kite Runner as a story about culture, however, misses what the book is really about. This is a novel about humanity. This is a story about friendship, loyalty, cruelty, longing for acceptance, redemption, and survival. The core story could be set in any culture because it deals with issues that are universal. The Kite Runner looks at how the main character, Amir, deals with a secret in his past and how that secret shaped who he became. It tells of Amirs childhood friendship with Hassan, his relationship with his father and growing up in a privileged place in society. I was drawn in by Amirs voice. I sympathized with him, cheered for him and felt angry with him at different points. Similarly, I became attached to Hassan and his father. The characters became real to me, and it was difficult for me to put the book down and leave their world. I highly recommend this book, especially for book clubs. For those of you who are not in a reading group, read it and then loan it to a friend. You are going to want to talk about it when you finish.

Theories for Determinants of Emotional States INTRODUCTION An individual fast asleep at night is suddenly awakened by a loud noise coming from somewhere within the house. He immediately becomes physiological agitated: the body begins to sweat, the heart beats faster, and hands begin to tremble. Does he experience fear, or perhaps another emotion such as anger, or even happiness? Schachter and Singer (1962) proposed a two-factor model that specifies the conditions under which people will experience one particular emotion or another when faced with an emotionally exciting event, such as impending danger. This model states that a person’s emotional response to danger is dependent on the interaction between their physiological arousal and cognitive appraisal of the situation (e.g. whether it is dangerous or not). Ordinarily, danger would trigger biological changes, such as increased heart rate, trembling, crying, and perspiration. These physiological changes in turn determine both the intensity (i.e. level) and quality (i.e. type) of our emotional response. However, the particular type of emotion experienced depends on how we cognitively perceive or ‘read’ the situation. For example, we experience fear if the situation is appraised as dangerous or life threatening, such as an approaching lion, or an imminent category 4 tornado. SUPPORTING ARGUMENTS In the scenario described at the beginning of this essay, the individual woken suddenly by a noise, and physiologically aroused will experience emotional arousal. The intensity of his emotions will be a direct function of his level of physiological arousal. So, for example, we will experience very strong emotions if his heart is beating extremely fast and he is sweating profusely. However, the type of emotion experienced will depend on how is appraises the situation. He will experience fear if for example he believes a burglar has broken into the house and is armed and dangerous. By contrast he may experience anger if he knows that his excitable pet dog probably knocked something down while chasing his cat around the house. Or he may experience happiness if he knows the noise was caused by his loving fiancà ©e who has just returned from the airport after long holiday her parents, and perhaps tripped over something when entering the darkened house. Schachter and Singers (1962) two- f actor model is actually a redevelopment of the James-Lange theory. James Lange originally proposed that emotional experience is contingent on the physiological changes induced by an event. Thus, for example, imminent natural disaster for example will first trigger an emotional response in an individual, for example anxiety. Because they feel anxious, the person will experience physiological changes consistent with this emotion, for example increased heart rate, and perspiration. ALTERNATIVE EXPLANATIONS Whether physiological changes precede emotional arousal, or vice versa, is a controversial subject. Psychologist Walter Cannon (1927/1987) proposed an model, known as the Cannon-Bard theory, which contends that physiological arousal is in fact contingent on emotional experience. It can be argued that human beings are not very good at monitoring physiological changes in their body. For example, subtle changes in heart rate, or mild increases in perspiration may go undetected (Chwalisz et al, 1988). If so, then people may simply fail to experience any emotion, regardless of their appraisals of the situation. Yet, people generally react instantaneously to danger, exhibiting signs of emotional disturbance, without necessarily being aware of an increase in heart rate or other physiological changes (Zillman, 1978, 1988). The emotional experience isn’t determined by our detection of biological changes, but rather may be contingent on how we appraisal of the stimulus, and our memory ( i.e. prior experience) and general knowledge about the stimulus. For example, an individual who suddenly comes face to face with a lion will correctly judge that this animal can kill and therefore his life is under threat. This appraisal in turn will produce fear. Similarly, the person may remember that he was viscously attacked the last time he met a lion, and/or more probably be aware of the fact that big carnivorous cats kill people. Another problem with the Schachter and Singer model is their failure to account for how people cope with threat or danger. They assume that physiological arousal elicits emotional arousal, so that they relationship between the two variables is always positive. However, theories on coping propose that two people confronted with the same stressful event may experience marked different intensities of anxiety. More specifically Janis and Mann’s (1977) conflict-theory argued that the level of intensity experienced varies depending on how people deal with stress generated by uncertainty what to do. Complacency results in little or no emotional arousal. Defensive avoidance refers to evasive strategies, such as denial, wishful thinking, and shifting responsibility -emotional arousal is generally low, but easily becomes intense when signs of the danger become salient. Hypervigilance denotes panic, and occurs when the danger seems highly imminent (e.g. an approaching tornado, or impendi ng illness). It is characterised by extremely high levels of emotional arousal. Finally, vigilance refers to a rational, and logical problem solving approach, and emotional arousal is considered to be ‘moderate’, rather than extremely high or low. The problem with Janis and Mann’s (1977) model is that to date there has been a paucity of experimental research testing the association between coping strategies and stress levels (but see Mann Tan, 1993). However, studies have demonstrated correlational relationships between coping styles and emotional arousal (Witte Allen, 2000), suggesting that the former should form an important element of Schachter and Singers (1962) model. More specifically, it is possible that physiological changes generate strong emotions when people cope in one particular way, and little or no emotion arousal when people cope another way. Stimulus Characteristics Schachter and Singers (1962) model makes no reference to features of the stimulus itself. Rogers (1983) argued that the way we respond emotionally to a stimulus, specifically a threatening communication such as a health warning, depends on how we perceive aspects of the stimulus. He argued that dangerous events, such as a probable illness or impending natural disaster contain cues as to the probability of the event, and its seriousness or magnitude. The greater our estimates of the seriousness of a threat, and its probability of occurrence, the greater the level of anxiety experienced. In other words, stimulus characteristics determine the intensity of our emotional experience. A large volume of research published since the mid 1970s has found ample evidence in support of Rogers (1983) ideas (see reviews by Eagly Chaiken, 1993; Milne et al, 2000). In fact Rogers formulations continue to influence professional thinking especially in trying to understand people’s emotional reac tions to threatening health communications. It can be argued that Rogers’s ideas do not invalidate Schachter and Singers (1962) model. Stimulus characteristics may simply be something else people consider, in addition to monitoring their physiological parameters, and trying to work out the situation. Or perhaps Rogers’s appraisals fit in with Schachter and Singers emphasis on appraisals of the situation. Thus, if people perceived the situation as highly dangerous, because of the high severity and probability of the danger, then they would interpret their physiological arousal as fear. METHODOLOGICAL AND ANALYTICAL ISSUES Critique of Schachter and Singers two-factor model requires closer scrutiny of the evidence they present in support of their model. Various methodological and analytic constraints limit the conclusions that may be drawn (Coolican, 1994). Firstly, the study design is questionable. This study was set up as a between-groups design with subjects assigned to either one of two physiological arousal conditions – a treatment group (injected with adrenaline), or placebo group (given a saline condition). There was no control group. The presence of a control group is significant because it allows the researcher to demonstrate that observed effects were not simply a result of the ‘anticipatory’ effects of interventions (treatment or placebo) given to subjects. Another problem with the design was the failure to control for background variables that may confound treatment effects. In particular, subjects baseline emotions prior to the study should have been accounted for in the analysis, in order to partial out any pre-intervention differences between groups. The population was a sample of introductory psychology students. This kind of sample is generally better informed that the average man on the street, and have been able to decipher the researchers’ hypotheses, and hence provide responses intended to confirm or refute the predictions. The sample size was also rather limited (just over a 100), making it more difficult to detect statistically significant differences between the groups. This may partly explain the absence of group differences in self-reports of anger between the adrenaline-ignorant and adrenaline-informed groups. The anger condition was problematic because it was felt that subjects didn’t want to display anger towards the experimenter regarding their participation in the experiment. The sample was not randomly recruited meaning that the findings may in fact be specific to the particular subjects used, and may not generalise accurate to the wider population. CONCLUSIONS Perhaps the best evidence in support of the two-factor model lies in the difference observed between the three ‘information’ conditions amongst subjects injected with adrenaline. Those in the adrenaline-ignorant and adrenaline-misinformed group reported the highest ‘happiness’ levels, presumably because, lacking information about why they were experiencing physiological arousal, there automatically assumed that they felt that way because they were happy. This demonstrates two things. Firstly, it shows that physiological arousal may elicit an emotional experience (intensity), and secondly that an understanding of the situation led to a particular type of emotional experience – happiness. This confirms supports the two-factor proposition that emotional experience is a function of the interaction between physiological and situational (i.e. cognitive) factors. Nevertheless, the evidence is questionable, largely due to the absence of a control group, and a lso the small sample size. Schachter and Singers analysis also fails to account for other factors that may moderate that may have an independent effect on emotional experience, regardless of physiological arousal, such coping strategy, memory, prior experience, and general knowledge. There is a strong possibility that the impact of physiological arousal may be significantly attenuated after accounting for additional factors. In essence, emotional experience in certain circumstances may be driven solely by cognitive factors (i.e. thoughts, perceptions, memory), with biological changes have little or no effect peoples emotional response.
